John Newton Hendry served in the US Navy in World War II and the Korean conflict. He retired from active duty as a Chief Petty Oficer (Boatswain Mate). In 1952 he and his first wife, Thelm Phyllis Wodock separated, and she returned with her two sons to her family in Philadelphia (Norwood, Deleware Co), Penna.
Son Robert William established contact with his father in 1978. At that time, John resided in Canyon Lake, Tex. Contact was lost in late 1978 when Robert was assigned to Germany (US Army), and his attempts to maintain contact went unanswered by John Newton. In 1999, son Robert was contacted by Davie Earl Hendry, brother of John Newton to inform hin of his father's death on 3 Oct 1998.

Thelma was cremated, and her ashes were strewn across the San Jauquine Valley by her granddaughter, Annette Hendry Taylor (daughter of son Ronald W and Margurite), according to her wishes. Her two surviving sons, John Newton Hendry, Jr. and Robert William Hendry were not informed of this, as she (Thelma) feared that they would not allow the cremation, opting instead for buriel in a cemetery, which Thelma did not want.

'Bob' led a very dynamic life, so far. His parents separated in 1952, when his mother Thelma Phyllis Wodock, with Skip (John) and Bob, moved from San Diego to her family home in Norwood, Delaware Co, Penna. There, they resided with her father, William Francis Wodock, her sister Evelyn Smith, Evelyn's 2 daughters and their husbands and children. Ron was born out of wedlock to Thelma Phyllis Wodock befor her marriage to John Newton Hendry.

In San Diego, Bob attended St Charles Borremeo Catholic School and the George Dewey Elementary School at 3251 Rosecrans Place (directly across the street from his home, which backed-up to Rosecrans Blvd)). His older brother Ron (half brother) and Ron's best friend, Fred Kinney, took Bob to the priest at St Charles to be baptized, while Bob was in the second grade.
Bob attended St Gabriel's Catholic School in Norwood. In late 1953, they moved into their own apartment in Prospect Park, Penna where they resided until about 1954. His mother purchased a home in Glenolden, Penna and they moved. The move entailed a change of schools to Our Lady of Fatima School in Secane, Penna, where Bob completed 4th and 5th grades.
Bob graduated from Interboro High School in Glenolden in 1963. There, he lettered in football (3 xs), basketball (1x) and track (3 xs). He enlisted in the Army in 1964 and was initially trained as a Crypto Analyst, later a Traffic Analyst, with the Army Security Agency. After serving a year in Vietnam as an Intelligence Sergeant, Bob attended Field Artillery Officer's Candidate School followed immediately by rotary wing flight training. Flight school was followed by more time in the Vietnam war as a pilot.
The Army selected Bob to attend Cameron University, Lawton, Okla., for the Degree Completion Program, and he earned a B.S. in Business Administration (Accounting) in 1978. He then received a M.S. in Systems Management from the University of Southern California in 1980. He retired from the Army in Heidelberg, Germany in Nov 1984 as a Major. Bob served in Europe for approximately 17 years, mainly in Germany (Rothwesten (bei Kassel), Katterbach (bei Ansbach), Fuerth (bei Nurnberg), Heidelberg, all in Germany; and Vicenza, Italy).
Bob currently (as of 20 Dec 2007) resides with his wife Gail Muriel Reckeweg, and their three children at 3678 Pine Cone Circle, Waldorf, Maryland 20602. They have resided there since they returned from Germany in June 1986.
